How to Make a Cushion Cover with Zip Closure: Step-by-Step Guide

Welcome to a new crafting adventure at Watership Down Crafts! Today, we're diving into the world of homemade gifts and decorations. I'll guide you through creating a stunning cushion cover with a zip closure, perfect for adding a personal touch to your home or giving as a thoughtful present. And remember, for those who'd rather skip the DIY, our Handmade Cushions offers a range of handmade options!

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Cut the Fabric: Measure and cut two pieces of fabric to your desired cushion size plus 1 inch for seam allowance.
  2. Prevent Fraying: Overlock or zigzag stitch along the bottom edge of both pieces to prevent fraying.
  3. Align and Pin: Place the fabric pieces right sides together, securing them with clips or pins. Mark two inches from each end on the bottom edge using a heat erasable pen or chalk.
  4. Sew the Bottom Seam: Adjust your seam allowance to half your zip's width. Sew regular stitches up to the 2-inch marks, then switch to the longest stitch length until the next mark, and back to regular stitches to the end.
  5. Press and Position Zip: Press the seam open. Place your zip face down, aligning the teeth with the stitch line. Ensure the zipper pull is within the longest stitches.
  6. Secure the Zip: Use pins, basting stitches, or tape (like masking tape) to hold the zip in place.
  7. Stitch the Zip: Sew along the zip edges using a zipper foot, pivoting at the 2-inch marks to sew over the teeth.
  8. Reveal the Zip: Remove any securing materials and carefully open the long stitches with a seam ripper to expose the zip.
  9. Assemble the Cushion: With the right sides together, pin or clip the remaining edges.
  10. Sew Remaining Edges: Starting from the bottom, sew around the three remaining edges.
  11. Finish the Edges: Use an overlock or zigzag stitch on these seams to prevent fraying.
  12. Turn and Stuff: Turn the cover right side out through the zip and insert your cushion pad.

And there you have it – a beautiful, handmade cushion cover with a zip closure! Perfect as a gift or a personal project, this cushion cover can add charm to any room.
