How I Design My Make-up Bags: A Maker’s Perspective

No Pattern? No Problem

I don’t use a printed pattern to design my make-up bags. I work by feel and function—adjusting shapes and sizes depending on what I want the bag to do. It might start as a simple rectangle, but by the time I’ve added boxed corners or a contrasting zip, it’s taken on a personality of its own.

Every bag is a one-off. I never batch cut, so each one is measured and made individually. That freedom is what keeps the process creative—and what gives each bag a slightly different character.

Why Fabric Choice Matters

Fabric does more than look pretty. I’m always on the hunt for pieces that feel good to the touch and give the right amount of structure without stiffness. Some are rescued from old sample books, others are offcuts that would otherwise go to waste.

Matching linings, zips, and outer fabrics is one of my favourite bits—it’s a bit like solving a colour puzzle. And because most of my bags are made from limited amounts of fabric, the combinations are rarely repeated.

The Importance of Washable Linings

A make-up bag should be practical. That’s why I always choose linings that are either wipeable or washable. They’re soft, flexible, and add an extra layer of protection without bulk.

You can wipe down a spill, hand wash the whole thing, or even pop it in a gentle machine wash depending on the fabric.

What Makes Them Feel Special?

It’s the details. The matching zip. The weight of the fabric. The way it stands up on its own or folds flat to tuck into a bag. I’m always aiming for that moment when someone picks one up and says, “Ooh, that’s nice.”

Every zip is sewn in with care, every lining chosen to complement—not clash. It’s not about perfection; it’s about making something that feels like it was made just for you.

FAQ

Do you use the same design for every bag?

No—each one is made individually, without a fixed pattern. That’s what makes them unique.

Can I choose the fabric?

I don’t offer custom orders, but I often use rare or rescued fabrics—so the one you fall in love with might be the only one of its kind.

Are they washable?

Yes, most are hand washable or suitable for a gentle machine wash. Always check the care notes on the listing.

Final Thoughts

Designing make-up bags from scratch means no two are ever quite the same. They’re not churned out by machines or made to a rigid formula—they’re made by hand, with care.

And if you’d like to own one? You know where to look.
