How to Make a Tablet Sleeve

If you enjoy sewing and want a quick project that’s both useful and satisfying, a tablet sleeve is a brilliant choice. It’s beginner-friendly, practical, and a great way to use up leftover fabric or off-cuts.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make a padded tablet sleeve that’s protective, stylish, and custom-fit to your device. For a different take, you might enjoy this Prop-Up Tablet Case Tutorial by The Inspired Wren, which includes a built-in stand for hands-free use.

What You’ll Need

  • Outer fabric (cotton, canvas, or upholstery offcuts work well)
  • Lining fabric (cotton or smooth synthetic)
  • Medium-weight fusible interfacing
  • Thin foam or quilt wadding for padding
  • Thread, pins or clips, fabric scissors
  • Sewing machine and iron
  • Zip (optional) or button/Velcro closure

Step 1: Measure Your Tablet

Start by measuring the width, height, and depth of your tablet. Add at least 2.5cm (1") seam allowance all the way around. This gives your sleeve a snug but not tight fit.

Write down:

  • Width + 2.5cm
  • Height + 2.5cm

Cut your outer fabric, lining, interfacing, and padding to these measurements.

Step 2: Prep the Layers

  • Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the outer fabric using an iron.
  • Layer the padding behind the interfaced fabric.
  • You’ll now have a sandwich: outer fabric + padding + lining.

Clip or pin the layers together.

Step 3: Sew the Outer and Lining Pieces

  • Sew around three edges, leaving the top open.
  • Repeat for the lining, but leave a small gap at the bottom for turning later.
  • Trim corners and excess seam bulk to neaten.

Step 4: Assemble the Sleeve

  • Turn the outer piece right side out and insert it into the lining (right sides facing).
  • Line up the raw top edges and sew around the opening.
  • Pull everything through the gap in the lining and stitch the gap closed.
  • Push the lining into the outer shell and press.

Optional: Add a Closure

  • If you’re adding a zip, insert it before sewing the sleeve closed.
  • For a flap-style sleeve, sew a button and loop or attach Velcro.

Why Make Your Own Tablet Sleeve?

Homemade sleeves offer complete control over the fabric, padding, and size. They’re a brilliant way to reuse beautiful materials, reduce waste, and create something useful from scraps.

FAQs

Can I make this without a sewing machine?
Yes, but it will take longer. You’ll need strong hand stitching, especially around the edges.

What’s the best fabric for a tablet sleeve?
Cotton or canvas for the outside, and something soft like brushed cotton or polyester for the lining.

How do I add extra padding?
You can layer thin foam or quilt wadding between the outer fabric and lining.

Will this fit a tablet with a case on?
If you measure with the case on, yes. Just remember to add enough seam allowance.

Can I upcycle fabric for this?
Absolutely—old jeans, jackets, or upholstery swatches all work brilliantly.
