Are Notebooks Recyclable? (UK Guide to Notebook Recycling & Sustainability)

Notebooks have been around for centuries. But in today’s world of tablets, apps, and digital everything — are notebooks still useful? Are they recyclable? Are they even relevant anymore?

As someone who makes embroidered notebook covers here in the UK, I hear these questions all the time — especially from customers looking for more sustainable, long-lasting options.

Are Notebooks Available?

Very much so! Notebooks are everywhere — from supermarkets and stationers to handmade versions like mine. In fact, there’s probably never been more choice:

  • Lined or plain pages
  • Hardback or soft cover
  • Spiral bound or stitched
  • Refillable notebook covers, designed to last

And despite the rise in digital tools, physical notebooks remain a top choice for many UK shoppers — especially those who value design, tactility, or a bit of personality in their stationery. That’s one reason I started offering embroidered notebook covers — they combine practicality with a touch of character, and you can see some of my designs in this collection.

Are Notebooks Recyclable?

This depends on the type of notebook. Here’s a quick guide:

Type of Notebook Can It Be Recycled?
Paper Only Yes, in most UK paper recycling
Spiral Bound Remove the metal wire first
Plastic Covers Not usually recyclable
Embroidered Notebook Covers Yes — because only the paper insert needs replacing

If you’re trying to cut down on waste, choosing a refillable notebook cover is one of the simplest eco-friendly swaps you can make. Instead of buying new notebooks over and over again, you just replace the inside pages.

Tip: Always check your local council’s recycling rules for notebooks. For more detailed advice, this UK guide explains what you can recycle at home:

Can Notebooks Go in Recycling?

Yes, notebooks can go in recycling — as long as they’re made mostly of paper. Paper-only notebooks can go straight into most UK household paper recycling. For other types, such as spiral-bound or plastic-covered notebooks, a bit of dismantling might be needed first.

Can Spiral Notebooks Be Recycled?

They can! Spiral notebooks are recyclable, but you’ll need to remove the metal spiral first. The pages can go in with your paper recycling, and the metal spiral can usually go in your metal recycling bin — but double-check with your local council to be sure.

Can You Recycle Notebooks with the Spiral?

Technically, no. You shouldn’t put notebooks into recycling bins with the spiral still attached. Recycling facilities need the materials separated, so it’s important to remove the spiral before recycling the paper pages.

Are Notebooks as Good as Laptops?

Well, that depends on what you want them for!

For... Best Choice
Quick internet research Laptop
Creative brainstorming Notebook
Mindful journaling Notebook
Spreadsheets & admin Laptop
To-do lists & planning Either

Laptops win on speed and connectivity. But when it comes to personal clarity, memory retention, or the simple joy of unplugging — many people still prefer pen and paper.

Are Notebooks Good for Journaling?

Absolutely. In fact, many people find that writing by hand helps them slow down, reflect, and be more intentional. It’s not just about the words — it’s the ritual.

Popular journaling styles include:

  • Gratitude journaling
  • Bullet journaling
  • Stream-of-consciousness writing
  • Habit tracking

Paired with a tactile, embroidered notebook cover, journaling becomes something you actually look forward to — not just another item on the to-do list.

Are Notebooks Classed as Stationery?

Yes — notebooks are part of the stationery family, along with pens, paper, envelopes, and planners. They’ve been a stationery staple for generations.

Notebooks show up in classrooms, offices, creative studios, and gift shops. And thanks to designs like mine, they’ve also become a thoughtful present — especially for writers, planners, and stationery lovers.

Final Thoughts

Are notebooks recyclable, useful, or outdated?

Honestly? They’re all three — depending on how you use them. But for many people, a good notebook is still an everyday essential.
